Video games are not often considered serious mediums for telling great stories. Yet those among us who have played them know that video games provide a unique ability to both tell a complex, wonderful story and allow the player to be a part of it.

Metal Gear Solid

While largely considered a game for sneaking around and steathily killing enemies, Metal Gear Solid is often overlooked for its wonderful story. The story is not written in stone (with two potential endings).

I've never played it, but I'm told it has a great story. You be the judge.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

By: jambredt 54,422 points  report  8 votes

Both KOTOR's were set WAY before the films or most novels in Star Wars, back when the Sith were a vast army and the galaxy was split down the middle. A story of hidden identity, switching allegiances, and a nice huge plot twist at the end...

Oh, and did I mention that you get to decide HOW the story progresses? Extra points for being non-linear.

Final Fantasy VIII

Sometimes lost in the race between the classic Final Fantasy VII and the newer, flashier Final Fantasy 10, FF8 is good on its own legs.

Final Fantasy VII

Considered by many to be the best if not one of the best storylines and RPG's to be made. Fears of the end of the world, Sephiroth as one of the best villains, turncoats, and tragic romance.

Final Fantasy X

By: jambredt 54,422 points  report  6 votes

The first Final Fantasy with all voice acting. While occasionally the story drags at points or the characters get annoying, the story is epic and brilliantly executed. The characters are forced to analyze what they hold dear and how far they are willing to go.

The Halo Series

By: jambredt 54,422 points  report  6 votes

HALO is often thought of as a multiplayer-oriented game, and it is. But the arc between the three games exploits the themes of honor, duty, valor, truth, and burying the hatchet.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2

By: jambredt 54,422 points  report  7 votes

While not as acclaimed as its predecessor, KOTOR 2 is nontheless a great story with similar themes as the first, but arguably - darker. Filled with enough plot twists to match number one.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

Much like the other games in this line, VC has a great setting and story in an attempt to see if there is any honor among thieves.

It's a shame that the moralizing of nagging mothers and over-zealous politicians obscure the GTA games and their well-developed gameplay and story.
