12 Comforting phrases or sayings that can go awry

How many times have you said something to comfort a friend or loved one, and the response you get is less than positive? Here are some of the phrases that, even with the best intentions, can go horribly awry. This Yayboo was not created to depress or sadden its reader but to merely portray that communication is key to understanding others and yourself. Think [and feel] before you speak. Mind you this is all my personal opinions and I'm not trained or certified for giving advice, but this is merely what I have noticed with my own experiences. Whether they work for another person is really anyone's guess.

It’s gonna be ok

How many times has someone told you this and you think "Really?" and considerate it all again in a more reflective light or "Really?!!?" and continued to freak out.

These things happen for a reason

By: Adonna55 114,411 points  report  1 votes

Yea maybe or maybe it happened to completely ruin your day, life, fill in the blank. When people are not thinking clearly, giving them reasons or helping them to work through their problems is much better than letting them wander over the "why me?" reasons.

It can’t get much worse/It can only get better

By: Adonna55 114,411 points  report  1 votes

When people have hit the bottom so to speak, there's only one way up right? Well alot of people don't know when they have hit the bottom or if they can get up from it. That's the tough part.

I don’t know what to say/do

By: Adonna55 114,411 points  report  1 votes

Really not a good thing to say in any situation because you are telling them they really have no options to fix or improve the situation. Instead, help them by saying "Well let's figure this out together," at least with that phrase they know they aren't alone.

I totally understand/feel you

By: Adonna55 114,411 points  report  1 votes

Really depends on what the situation is. If whoever you are trying to help is suffering from a problem you once had, go right ahead but if it's something you've never encountered, it's better you don't because then your put on the spot to give them a quick fix solution when you really have no idea what to do.

Well, look on the bright side…

By: Adonna55 114,411 points  report  1 votes

When someone is in the darkest dark of places, people can even forget what the 'light' looks like. Make sure if and when you say this, you have a really good point to make that will help them remember that there is a bright side.

[rolls their eyes, shrug, stare indifferently] saying whatever

By: Adonna55 114,411 points  report  1 votes

Just don't and if this is the reaction you are ready to do, tell them to go to someone else who is more willing and capable of helping them.

What’s in the past, is in the past/get over it

By: Adonna55 114,411 points  report  1 votes

Well the past is effecting the present which could effect the future, so yeah, unless there's been plenty of time to recuperate from the disaster and all should have been resolved a year ago, then looking at the past is the only way to help fix the present or at least until time machines are invented.

Telling you a terrible or horrific experience they went through that isn’t even related to your suffering

By: Adonna55 114,411 points  report  1 votes

Unless it relates to what is going on or you think it will help your friend get their mind off the current situation (laugh, cheer up, etc), probably not a good idea to depress them even more. Plus, some people might take that as a "are you trying to one up my misery with your depressing life story? Thanks but no thanks"

Calm down

By: Adonna55 114,411 points  report  1 votes

This is the worst thing to say to a person when they are beginning to calm down themselves, so be advised, timing is everything with this phrase.

When god closes a door, he opens a window

By: Adonna55 114,411 points  report  1 votes

There are some variations on this one, but be careful of people who are seriously depressed. They might just take that as an invitation to jump out a window.

You’re overreacting

By: Adonna55 114,411 points  report  1 votes

Oh this is bad in any situation I think, unless it's really something 99.9 percent of people would think is really stupid to freak out over.
